What System do I need to view the web site?
The 100th Entry web site has been tested using Windows XP Home Edition and the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape and Opera. It has not been set up or tested for Apple Mac. Unfortunately, due to the number and size of images on most pages, the site is NOT dial-up friendly; best results are achieved using BROADBAND. To get the most from interactive pictures and other features, it is ESSENTIAL that Javascript is enabled. The site is best viewed with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels; other resolutions may cause the pages to appear too big or too small. Browser TEXT SIZE should be set to NORMAL although small variations should be acceptable, but very large text can cause problems with table alignment. Your browser will also need to support FRAMES and LAYERS (these are normally default settings on most modern browsers, although older browsers will not support these functions at all).
NOTE:- Some of the above settings (particularly Javascript) may cause your browser (particularly INTERNET EXPLORER) to flag up a security warning which needs to be overridden. If this happens, you can contact Site Admin with your browser details to get instructions on what to do.
View the Tour to see what the Site should look like
The Site Tour video is about 5 minutes long and has no sound track; however the Media Player has controls to skip forward or backwards. The purpose of the video is to show the main functions, pages and links of the 100th Entry Web Site as it should look and operate with Javascript, Flash and Acrobat Reader functional. It was recorded in Internet Explorer 7 with a screen resolution of 1024x768 pixels.
Category: Text Size
The text on some pages seems to be out of alignment or overlaps other parts of the page.
Where possible I have used 'pixel fonts' which means that if you change your system display settings, text characters are not affected noticeably. However, browsers have a "TEXT SIZE" setting which I cannot influence. Therefore if this is set to LARGE or VERY LARGE the text on the web page may become unpredictable and 'run over' or appear out of line. To address the needs of the majority of visitors, the web pages have been designed for viewing with a NORMAL text size setting.

Why am I not on the 100th Entry Group Photo? (asked Sept 2006)
Two Group photos are available (1962 and 1964). The 1962 version shows about 142 apprentices from a total intake of 155, so 13 are missing. The 1964 version has a better coverage, but there are still a handful missing.
Why is the picture permanently obscured by yellow boxes - I can't see who's on it!
Many images display an overlay of yellow boxes when the mouse cursor is moved over the picture. This technique is done using javascript which some browser settings don't like (in particular my most unfavourite browser IE!). This overlay MAY be permanently ON (whether you hover the mouse or not) if your browser does not have JAVA enabled or your security settings are configured to block Java script. There is a thread on the Forum for feedback on this topic.

Who is the guest who seems to be permanently looking at the forum?
The term "guest" is given to anyone who is not registered or who is not logged in; it doesn't belong to any specific individual. So you may see a guest on the forum several times in a day (suggesting that someone is on permanently) but that could be several different people on at different times. I have no way of knowing who the guests are; it could even be me (or you) if we are logged out. (I have since found out that GOOGLE visits the Forum regularly and is also identified as a Guest).
Every time I visit the forum, I have to log in. This despite asking to remember me by ticking the box next to login.
From the Forum FAQs...... Why do I get logged off automatically? If you do not check the Log me in automatically box when you log in, the board will only keep you logged in for a preset time. This prevents misuse of your account by anyone else. To stay logged in, check the box during login. If, despite carrying out the above procedure, you STILL have to log in every time, then it must be something to do with cookies being deleted every time you close your browser. If you use Internet Explorer, check this: Click 'Tools' / 'Internet Options' / 'Advanced'; scroll down to 'Security', and check the status of "Empty Temporary Internet files Folder When Browser Is Closed" (about the 8th box under 'Security'. If this box is ticked, then everytime you close your browser all Temp files (INCLUDING COOKIES) are deleted. This MAY be why you have to keep logging back in. Other browsers will have similar settings. (It has now become apparent that this can happen if you have ever entered the wrong logon info, even if you got it right the second time. Somehow the system remembers that you once logged in with a bad ID).
Would it be possible to fit a clickable Link on the Forum back to "HOME" on the Main Site Page ? At the moment you can click on Forums on the Main Page , and end up at the Forums, but you cannot return to the HOME Page !
At the bottom of every Forum page there is a link with the caption "100th Entry main web site"; click on this to display the main web site Home page. The Forum is seperate from the web site and many members use a browser that has TABS (ie any modern browser) which is set up to open the Forum in the tab next to the web site. The following browser settings should ensure that the link opens in a new TAB (rather than window) to the right of the 100th Entry page without messing up the popup functionality on other pages......
